Well folks, we’ve finally done it. Pixels Per Minute can bust out the “NEXT GEN” rubber stamp, as we recently purchased an Xbox One! Shane and I have been debating which console to snag first for months, and we keep coming back to the question “What games do we want to play?” Luckily, the Forza Horizon 2 demo and impending release was a strong enough reason to throw our money down on an Xbox One.
First, what we got was the $399 Kinect-free Xbox One, with an extra controller and Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition. The Kinect decision was made based primarily on cost, but also some lingering usage / privacy concerns about the device. If there is a compelling reason in the future to grab one, we’ll probably get one. Along with a possible Kinect, we’ll be grabbing a PS4 in the future for the full “Next Gen” experience.
Right off the bat, this thing is big. The comments saying it looks like a VCR are pretty accurate. While the size is offputting, the design itself is appealing, if a little unassuming (being a big black box and all). Moving to the controllers, the design feels like a good iteration on the already excellent 360 controller. I especially love the rumble triggers and the knurled texture on the analog sticks. Unfortunately, the shoulder button placement is a little awkward in comparison to the 360. Once we get some more game time with them, I’m sure our muscle memory will adapt.
We’re looking forward to streaming more console titles, and getting more familiar with the Xbox as more games and updates roll out for it. Look for more Xbox (and PS4!) exclusive content on our site soon.
